Thoughts on Thanksgiving

Give thanks to the LORD of hosts, for the LORD is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! -Jeremiah 33:11

Jeremiah 33:11 tells us to give thanks to the Lord because He is good and His love endures forever.  The two main thoughts in this passage give us a pretty good guide for the Thanksgiving holiday when we gather with friends and loved ones to reflect on the blessings of the Lord.

First, our primary act of thanksgiving is simply because God is good.  In all things and at all times, God is good.  For many, the last 12 months have been challenging and difficult.  It may be a challenge in itself to find something for which to be thankful, but the Bible tells us that our primary focus in life probably should not be the challenges of right now, but rather the goodness of God.  God’s goodness sustains us through difficulty and pain.  His goodness also keeps our hearts humble in times of joy and gladness.

Secondly, Jeremiah says that God’s steadfast love endures forever. The Psalmist echoes this thought as well, “Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; for His lovingkindness is everlasting” (107:1). The Bible tells us that there is nothing that can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus.  While because of our own hardness of heart not all will be saved,  Jesus loves us all.  He is gracious and kind.  He delays judgment because of His mercy.  This generosity of Christ stems from His love that endures forever.  The Apostle Paul says that there is nothing that can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus (Rom 8:38-39).

So as you give thanks this week, I pray that you first reflect on the goodness of God and His everlasting love for you. By His grace, may He bless you and keep you and cause His face to shine upon you and give you peace!  Happy Thanksgiving.
